Selecting Boat Trim Cylinders

Most original Mercruiser trim cylinders have a casting number in the side of the main black tube. That casting number can also tell you exactly which trim cylinder you'll need to order to replace your old or damaged cylinder.

If your trim cylinders are badly corroded, damaged or missing, don't worry. We'll explain in a moment how to order the correct ones, even if you don't know the casting number.

If you know what your casting number starts with, order replacement trim cylinder for appropriate boat side per the following chart:

If Trim Cylinder Casting Number starts with:
Starboard side Trim Cylinder
Port side Trim Cylinder
98704 or 98703
14034 or 14035
815954 or 815935

Now, it's a little trickier if you don't know or can't determine the casting number from your existing trim cylinders. It can still be done, so don't panic. Here's how to determine the correct trim cylinders:

Boat
Starboard side Trim Cylinder
Port side Trim Cylinder
Alpha One Gen 2, 1991 or newer
Boat has a Bravo Drive
Boat is from 1981 to 1990
See below for measuring main cylinder tube

How to measure main trim cylinder for 1981 to 1990 Boats

If your boat is from 1981 to 1990, you'll need to get out a tape measure and measure JUST the main black tube (see the picture on the right as reference of what portion to measure), from the tip of the mounting eye to the end of the main tube. DO NOT include the length of the part that comes out of the main tube to lift your outdrive. Measure ONLY the main tube and mounting eye. Order replacement trim cylinder for appropriate length per the following chart: Trim-Cylinder-Measurement
1981-1990 Boats
Length of Main Cylinder
Starboard side Trim Cylinder
Port side Trim Cylinder
15-1/2 inches
16-1/2 inches

Be sure you measured JUST the main black tube. See paragraph & photo above for details.
