Selecting Trim Cylinders

Most original Mercruiser trim cylinders have a casting number in the side of the main black tube. That casting number can also tell you exactly which trim cylinder you'll need to order to replace your old or damaged cylinder.

If your trim cylinders are badly corroded, damaged or missing, don't worry. We'll explain in a moment how to order the correct ones, even if you don't know the casting number.

Read the list below and, if you know your casting number starts with either number on the left, order replacement trim cylinders with the numbers on the right.

If your trim cylinder casting number starts with:

  • 14034 or 14035, order #9B-106-01 for the starboard/right side and 9B-106-02 for the port/left side
  • 98704 or 98703, order #9B-104-01 for the starboard/right side and 9B-104-02 for the port/left side
  • 815954 or 815935, order #9B-116-01 for the starboard/right side and 9B-116-02 for the port/left side

Now, it's a little trickier if you don't know or can't determine the casting number from your existing trim cylinders. It can still be done, so don't panic. Here's how to determine the correct trim cylinders:

  • If your boat is Alpha One Gen 2, 1991 or newer or you have a Bravo Drive, you'll almost certainly need to order #9B-116-01 for the starboard/right side and 9B-116-02 for the port/left side.
  • If your boat is from 1981 to 1990, you'll need to get out a tape measure and measure JUST the main black tube (see the picture on the right to know what part to measure), from the tip of the mounting eye to the end of the main tube. DO NOT include the length of the part that comes out of the main tube to lift your outdrive. Measure ONLY the main tube and mounting eye.

If that length is:

  • 15-1/2 inches, order #9B-104-01 for the starboard/right side and 9B-104-02 for the port/left side
  • 16-1/2 inches, order #9B-106-01 for the starboard/right side and 9B-106-02 for the port/left side
